Common Sense Media: Registration flow

Common Sense Media is a non profit that provides resources to harness the power of media, technology and public policy to improve the wellbeing of every child. One of the top priorities of the organization is to grow the membership base so we can continue to engage our users with valuable content even outside of our website. One way to encourage sign ups on our website was to improve the design of our registration flow.

The goal was to make the existing process simpler, more streamlined, transparent (on the data we're collecting and why), with better messaging, an improved mobile experience, and fewer distractions with visual cues guiding the users through the process.

Challenges

  • Transparency and trust: letting users know at every step what data we are collecting and why.
  • Age gateway: In addition to guardians and educators, our site users also include kids and teenagers. As a non-profit advocating for children's rights, we follow COPPA strongly and this restricts us from collecting information from anyone age 13 or below. So we had to design 3 different flows for adults (18+), children (13 and below) and teens (13-17)
  • The design should be an extension of the Common Sense brand voice despite the absence of a UI style guide or pattern library.
